Josef Isaiah Keyes

BIOGRAPHY

Josef Isaiah Keyes is a contemporary visual artist from Washington, D.C., now based in Baltimore, Maryland. Working primarily across mixed media, Josef Isaiah explores introspection, transformation, and the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. His practice moves between abstraction and figuration, layering surfaces of color, gesture, and texture creating emotionally charged environments that evoke memory, imagination, identity, and personal evolution.
From an early age, Josef Isaiah started becoming deeply reserved, often navigating the world through observation and imagination. Early experiences that challenged his ability to communicate and express himself shaped his sensitivity to the emotional and psychological dimensions of human experience. Over time, he learned to cultivate an inner language, one that is rooted in reflection, intuition, and self-awareness. Art became a tool of developing that language, allowing him to communicate what could not always be expressed through words.

Josef Isaiah’s relationship with art became both a practice of self-discovery and a form of documentation. As he once reflected in connection with his first solo exhibition:
"Like a harmonious dance, art and I intertwined. With my natural gift of imagination as a guiding light, I embarked on a path of self-discovery, with art as my documentation. My lifestyle became a bold but subtle statement of 'I'm Here.'"
This idea of "I'm Here" continues to resonate throughout Josef's practice. His work is rooted in the belief that the act of creating can become a declaration of presence, a way of witnessing one's life force or even transformation; while making space for others to recognize their own experiences within the work. Through layered compositions and dynamic visual forms, he explores the space between the internal and external, the conscious and unconscious, harmony and disruption.

Josef Isaiah has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and presented his debut solo exhibition in 2023 at Foundry Gallery in Washington, D.C. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where he continues to expand his visual language and interdisciplinary approach to making. His practice moves fluidly between fine art, design, and everyday experience, with a focus on creating culturally and spiritually resonant work through bold aesthetics, intentional form, and an ongoing exploration of what it means to be fully present.
For Josef Isaiah Keyes, art is not simply an object or image, but a way of living, reflecting, and becoming. His work serves as both a record of his own evolution and an invitation to others to pause, look inward, and recognize the transformative power of imagination.
